The Diocesan Archives is erected in accordance with Canon Law #482, which charges the Chancellor with the responsibility for the Archives. The appointed Archivist is granted canonical faculties to fulfill this mandate.
The Diocesan Archives seeks to promote an understanding of the origins, aims, and goals of the Diocese as reflected in the workings of the official Diocesan agencies, institutions and offices.
The Diocesan Archives collects, preserves and makes available to researchers the records of individuals and organizations engaged in work which reflects the work of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Owensboro. These individuals and organizations may operate within the Diocese in an adversarial capacity, as a unit supervised by the Diocese, or as advocate of the Diocese. The documents are open to researchers in pursuit of historical and genealogical research. The office is open on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of each week, at other times by request.
The responsibility of the office includes taking care of collecting, appraising, organizing and preserving the records of the Diocese and making them available to qualified researchers. Diocesan documents are essential in providing the “link” between the past and the present to benefit the future.
